Welcome to the department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), one of the top Mechanical Engineering programmes in Africa with a nearly 60-year history. We have a long standing tradition of excellence in teaching, research and community service bringing together internationally leading staff and extraordinary students. The ME Programme was one of the three Bachelor of Science programmes (Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) that started the then School of Engineering after the University was established in 1961. The University awarded its first batch of students in BSc Mechanical Engineering Programme in 1964. The programme has been one of the most attractive to prospective engineering candidates ever since.
The department currently offers Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in ME. With effect from the 2018/2019 academic year, the department now offers five, four-year undergraduate degree programme leading to the award of B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering, B.Sc. Marine Engineering, B.Sc. Aerospace Engineering, B.Sc. Industrial Engineering and BSc Automobile Engineering. The department also runs a two-year top-up programme for HND holders in collaboration with the Institute of Distance Learning in KNUST.
Our Bachelor’s degree graduates are equipped with skills, knowledge and attributes to be successful in both governmental and non-governmental agencies especially in industry and research. For almost 60 years, the department has churned out graduates from various countries into all facets of industry and research. Graduates are employed by industries like manufacturing, automobile, marine, energy, food and agro processing. Some of them, later branch into business management, finance, public administration, showing the beauty and versatility of mechanical engineering.
We also offer graduate programmes in Mechanical Engineering (M.Sc. and M.Phil.) and Renewable Energy Technologies (MSc and M.Phil.). The graduate programmes have specializations in Thermo-fluids and Energy Systems Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Design and Manufacturing, and Renewable Energy Technologies.
Our research areas address pressing needs of the society. Faculty members in KNUST’S department of Mechanical Engineering work on thematic areas such as fluid mechanics (Aerodynamics, fluids and thermal engineering), mechanical design & manufacturing, mechatronics, biomechanics, combustion, dynamics and control, automotive engineering, materials & structurers. The ME department takes pride in its education efforts especially in its ‘Design, Build and Test” pedagogical approach which is very common with our undergraduate projects.
We have global partner universities and industries across Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The Mechanical Engineering programme at KNUST is the first choice in Ghana and West Africa for all those who seek to pursue Mechanical Engineering.
The Academic staff strength currently stands at twenty-six (26): three professors, eight Senior Lecturers, fourteen Lecturers and one Technical Instructor. The ME department has thrived over the years and it is determined to making significant contributions to research, education, community service and to solve other societal challenges. We look forward to being part of future technological breakthroughs and shaping the future of Mechanical Engineering. We hope you will join us.
You are welcome!!
